End of Summer Traditions

Posted on 10:43 by Unknown
It really is my last day of summer vacation now... Tomorrow starts 3 days of meetings - I'll be learning about Common Core, planning with my team, having training on the new online grade book, and watching the mandatory yearly videos on sexual harassment and blood born pathogens. Fun! (Yeah right). Then Friday afternoon comes and I get 3 1/2 hours to work in my classroom.

I woke up thinking of all the things I normally do at the end of summer, all the traditions- some fun, some practical - and started wondering if it's just my family... I doubt it.

Okay - here's a  relatively short list of things I do every year around this time:

John's Incredible Pizza
John's Incredible Pizza
We always take the boys for one last hurrah of summer. We are more Chuck E Cheese people, but going to John's Incredible Pizza - with the bigger kid games - is always fun. We went this past weekend. :)

Massage Envy
The past years I usually only get a couple of massages a year - and those are usually because I am given a gift certificate... and then I wait until I start getting eye twitches or I can't move my neck. One near my birthday and one for the beginning of school. After moving desks and classroom furniture, my back is usually begging me to relax. I went in yesterday afternoon and it was wonderful. There is a chance I dozed off... maybe not, but my to do list did disappear from my thoughts for a while.

Haircuts

Every end of summer means getting one last haircut for the boys (and sometimes for myself). I'm still trying to grow mine out this year after cutting it for Locks of Love, I want it longer. I am considering trying to get rid of my grays myself today. I haven't dyed my hair since college - and back then I had help... we'll see...

Cleaning the house
It's the same thing as right before we leave on vacation... When heading back to school I want to have everything looking extra nice at home. Of course that's almost impossible since the boys are still not back in school and love to play...

Making Crockpot bags/prepping meals

Going back to school makes me so completely drained that dinner is usually the last thing I want to think about - so I like to make up some things for the freezer that I can whip out for dinner. Casseroles, cooking chicken, and getting the ingredients for crockpot bags ready helps keep food on the table during the first couple of weeks of school.

Last Movie and Frozen Yogurt

Today my sister is coming out to visit and while auntie is here we are going to forget the work and go to the movies. Of course tonight we will also head for one last Frozen Yogurt stop.

New Clothes

The end of summer - at least for me - means I have to find a couple new shirts and capris for the start of school. Its going to be capri weather until November, so I don't start worrying about long pants for awhile. Just need to pick up some things that aren't as "comfy" and more professional looking to move back into school mode.  The boys pick out a few new things, but for the most part we wait until they actually need something before we go out to purchase.

Laundry

On the final day of summer I like to run the machine non stop - getting all the laundry done. It's weird...

How do you finish out summer?

Last Day of Summer...

Posted on 10:00 by Unknown
Okay, okay... it's not technically the last day of summer vacation - but tomorrow I move all the school stuff out of my house and have access to my classroom.... given previous experience I will probably live there the majority of this next week before meetings start the following week... alone and with my kids trying to get everything *perfect*.  Of course we all know that perfection in the classroom really doesn't exist - especially while chasing a 3 year old - there is always something that can be tweaked.  So after today there will be pictures of my classroom, and how I'm trying to set it up differently with the same efficiency as I had the past years.  We'll see.

I've done a lot this summer to help prep.  I know it drives my dear, wonderful, considerate husband batty (can you tell he is probably reading this?) with all the stuff I do - but it really makes the transition easier having it done.  Not that my school list is short - no, it's not - but I'm on my way.

So what have I prepped this summer?  Figured I would make a list with links so you can see it all in one spot.  Then there is the reason that at the moment I need to know I actually did a bunch of stuff since I'm starting to feel overwhelmed.

Okay, here's some of what I did:

*Notebooks, Binder, and Folders

*Fill a Bucket Mailbox - posted on Instagram

*Homework Folders and Student Award Necklaces

*Behavior Chart

*Answer Key Binder

*Back to School Packet

*Sorted Place Value Popsicle Sticks

*Numbers on Clothespins - ready for CAFE goals

*Task Card Sorter, Patience Chart, Writing Journals

*Pencil Boxes and Team Supplies

*Magnet Numbers

*Name/Picture Squares - ready for their smiling first day of school pictures

I know that's not everything, but a lot of it is just prepping paperwork - printing, making copies, laminating, etc... not exactly the fun stuff to show off here on the blog.

So overall, what am I hauling in tomorrow?

*5 big blue tubs stuffed full of prepped materials - pencil boxes, journals, folders, supplies, etc
*2 Task Card sorters
*2 big boxes and 2 crates full of labeled notebooks
*2 crates of binders and teacher's editions
*4 empty crates
*an empty 3 drawer storage thing
*a box of read alouds
*my mailbox
*my patience ruler
*one or two 4 ft. fold up tables

Probably will need 2 car trips to get it all in... maybe... the point that it has to get out of the house ASAP!

Have a wonderful day.  Remember that today is the last day to enter the $50 TPT Gift Card Giveaway - Pinterest Style.

School To Do List Linky Party for Summer :)

Posted on 05:00 by Unknown

I've been waiting for a to do list linky out in Blogville... haven't found one yet, so I decided to tackle one myself over here.  Link up at the bottom if you want.  :)

Last year I made my classroom all cute.  This summer, I didn't bring home a lot of "stuff" from school to redecorate - I still love my classroom.  I don't want to change it a bunch at all for this next year.  I also don't have access, so the "stuff" I brought home was more to get organized with curriculum.

School To Do List (at least at this point)

Great way to get kids to use better word choices in writing!
1.  Synonym Board - beg for fries containers from McD's

2.  Reread classroom read alouds and create activity packs for them.

3.  Math texts - create task cards for each unit (that I don't already have - basically everything from August to January).

4.  Create timeline/story of CA - use S.S. text

5.  Create activities for the different Science units
6.  Read Teach Like a Pirate
7.  Reread Daily 5, CAFE, Book Whisperer
8.  Read Everyday Editing - figure out how I can implement Mentor Sentences into my schedule

9.  Fill in my planner

10. Type up word wall words and find vocabulary pictures that correspond

11.  Print and laminate a ton

12.  Homework folders ready

13.  Binder information ready

14.  Reading logs ready

15.  School supply shopping once the sales start
Pinned Image
16.  Add fabric ruffles to my circle pans

17.  Start making anchor charts for the year

Looking From Third to Fourth: Monday Made It - Last Monday of the School Year
18.  Make magnets for students to take home

Well, that's it for the moment.  Too bad I'm really not motivated at all... :)
