My House Decorations - Want to See??

Posted on 19:04 by Unknown

Linking up with Christina to share some pictures of my decorated house.

We use these wooden garlands around all the downstair doorways.  Some of the doors also get a little wreath.

Outside we have Frosty (and 2 deer).

I've always had this thing with nutcrackers.  The little "traditional" one in the front I've had since junior high or high school… long enough to forget when exactly I picked him up.  The teacher one my student gave me a couple of years ago.
Yes, somehow my boys' stocking holders broke while in storage - and those things are expensive to replace.  Between our extra curious dog and our 3 year old (they would have pulled them down from the mantle), we decided to use wreath holders on the boys' bedroom doors.  I love them!

My in laws like to move every couple of years… and every time they move they give us more of their stuff.  I loved this little town, so my mother in law sent them over about 7 years ago.  As the boys have grown, they are in charge of setting this up every year.  Some years they put "snow" under the houses, this year they didn't.

Our tree makes me happy - even though we have to rearrange the furniture to fit it.  This year hubby had to take all the lights off of it (it was a pre lit tree), since all the lights died after 10 years of using it.  Now it has LED lights that will last a lot longer.

My sister is letting us use this tree on our kitchen counter.  It is extra festive!

Go show off your house decorations over at the linky party!

Hope you had a great day!  Thank you so much for your support with the TPT sale!  I picked up some great deals the past couple of days too.  :)

Instagram Style Five for Friday

Posted on 21:12 by Unknown
fiveforfriday2_thumb3_thumb3

This week I've been taking pictures!  Wanted to share some with you as part of Doodlebug's Weekly Linky Party!  You actually get 6 of them - can't figure out which one to get rid of... and I'm ready to party!!  3 day weekend here we come!

First off - This was only a 4 day week for me.  It wasn't supposed to but I had to be home with a "possibly" sick kid on Monday.  He was ill on Sunday night, and not knowing what the next day would bring I called in for a sub.  The whole thing of making sub plans at the last minute isn't for me... so I needed to give myself some time to get it done.  BTW - He felt much better for the most part on Monday.

Anyhow, when I was home I decided (with an idea from my dad) to finally push the self cleaning oven button on the oven.  Only the top one, and there was only one fire...

On Tuesday we had our Scholastic box show up - these books were those freebies that the kids were able to choose due to ordering in the "Beginning of school - get all the bonus points as possible - please help our class" order.  Those sweet 13 families raised over 10,000 bonus points for our class!

This week we also celebrated our puppy's 2nd birthday.  The boys and I headed to the pet store and picked up a 3 foot long rope and more of her favorite bouncy balls.  Little things... we've learned our lesson from last year - she destroys most of her toys, so things have to be indestructible.

I sing.  Just a fun fact about me.  I'm also really shy and afraid of microphones.  So I'm not really sure why I decided to sign up this year for the church Christmas choir.  We've been practicing for a while now, since the Christmas choir really starts singing at Thanksgiving and it's an every week type of thing.  Anyway, Thursday night - probably because I had recess duty this week and had to yell for everyone to freeze - those high soprano notes were extra high.  Thankful for my Minnie mug with hot tea & honey - and for my student that gave it to me 3 years ago.  :)

I saw an example of this little owl on Facebook last night, so I switched out my art project to make them today.  Above is my example.  My students will finish up on Tuesday (some of my ELL's were gone at that moment in time and need to finish).  Super simple - paper plate, fold one edge forward - then fold back the other way, then bring in the wings before giving a quick staple (to keep it flat - the eyes are glued over the staples).  I gave my students a strip of white construction paper, which they folded into 1/4's - in 2 of the sections they drew the eyes, the other 2 sections had the feet.  Then they took some of the extra white areas and created a triangle beak. Decorate, cut, glue, and done.
This picture makes me mad - but I feel the need to spread the word about these little book lights.  They don't work.  I was all excited about giving my students a Flashlight Friday - and my students were excited too.  So I went out to a certain dollar type store and bought a class set.  My own son was being a helper this morning in the classroom and opened one up.  Turned it on - looked great.  Turned it off, then on again - and it didn't turn on.  Maybe it's just a dud - but I have 35 more of them that may not work.  Didn't realize that the store doesn't accept returns or that the manager wouldn't exactly be a kind person.  I won't be shopping there again... which is probably okay since I never felt safe going there anyway.

Have a wonderfully long weekend!  :)

What's in my students' desks?

Posted on 19:53 by Unknown
I know I've told you already, but this year I'm providing my students with exactly the supplies they need (rather than them bringing in their own supplies and not matching everyone else).  Some of these things will start off the year in a basket to keep them separate, but will end up in their desks after we learn some rules.

Spiral Notebooks:
Spelling notebook - We aren't allowed to write in our spelling workbooks - don't know why, but we aren't.  The kids practice their spelling words, patterns, word work, and cursive in this notebook.
Mentor Sentences - Something new I'm starting this year.  This will take the place of our traditional DOL.
Journal - I have my students do random journal writes throughout the year when I need them to brainstorm, or when they have a chance to work on writing.  On Fridays we also do our 3, 2, 1's in them.  (3 things they learned during the week, 2 things they loved, 1 thing they would change - or 1 goal to work on.)

Composition Books:
Math - I'm getting rid of all the random papers in their binders, and it's all going into a composition book.  Problem of the day, Notes, Reflection, Tables, Graphs - basically anything that goes on an anchor chart will end up in here too.
Reading Vocabulary - Every week we have new vocabulary we are learning for our reading.  We stick them in here in addition to our story maps and making connections lists.
Reading Log - This is mainly for their weekly homework assignment, though we will start off in August doing this full class.

Binder -

At the moment the binders are still locked up in my cupboard at school but they will contain their subject dividers and other things in sheet protectors.  Sheet protectors turn these papers into graphic organizers they can write with dry erase marker on.  These pages also act as dividers and help keep the kids organized.  A couple of weeks ago I made up my ipad themed Student Notebook Set - I LOVE IT!

*Math divider (front) - App bubbles will be for units we learn.
*Multiplication Fact Sheet (back)
 - This section will contain different math grades, areas to work on (their Think Central and IXL sheets), and any random math papers that they aren't done with.  We make a math game list on binder paper for easy reference too.
*Reading divider (front) - Same thing as math - each app bubble will be for our unit.
*Story Map (back) - Sometimes we do a quick story and I have them give me a story map on it.  This will help save some paper.
*Boggle (front) - This helps out for the weekly word work game.
*Reading Strategies (back) - This goes into more depth than the regular story map.
After these sections will come papers not in sheet protectors since they will be recording information directly on them.
*32 Book Challenge
*In class story summary - after silent reading we are taking a few moments to record what we read (not pictured - still need to buy it from TPT).

For writing it's a little different...

*Heart Map (front) - Student Generated
*Rainbow Edit (back)
This section will contain their rough drafts and works that need to be finished.  Once finished they turn it into me.

Folders - My kiddos get 2 paper folders (other than their Homework folder)

*Classwork - inside one side says "Save", the other says "Finish"
*Sight Words/Leveled group work - these folders are kept in a basket ready for intervention moments.  I have their fluency information inside with their appropriate sight word lists.

Then of course is their text books, workbooks, pencil boxes, etc... Books are stored in crates (1 crate per team) right next to their desks.

What do you give your students to keep them organized throughout the year?

Linking up with Kristen and Elizabeth for their Organization Party.

Random, School Clutter, and My Favorite Teacher

Posted on 07:57 by Unknown

Michelle from Fabulous in First is hosting her weekly random party.

Random - I can do random!

First

Here is a couple of pictures from the 4th of July.  I made smores and a shark/whale fruit thing

Then...

Christina from Bunting, Books, and Bainbridge wants to see our piles of school stuff - so without further ado, here is my clutter.  Please don't judge.

Yes, even the top of the dog crate has been taken over - and at the moment the top of the garage freezer has all my fabulous notebook finds on top... but I need to find another place to store those.  Above - you aren't seeing double, I did bring my school laminator home to join my home laminator.  I even set up a TV tray to get the jobs done.  It's working!

Now...

Mrs. Reed from Flying into First Grade wants to know our favorite teachers growing up.  My favorite teacher ever was Mrs. VanMastright.  She was my 2nd and 3rd grade teacher.  She rolled up with us.  :)  I remember her loving owls, and doing a gigantic monthly calendar that took up the entire wall.  Each one of us would have to find an important date in history that matched up to our specific day - we learned random history everyday.  She taught me how to make fabric books using cardboard, we pushed cloves into oranges to make ornament gifts for parents, and she taught us cursive.  She did a reading incentive program that included the top class winners going with her (in her car) to the ice cream place for clown sundaes.  I was often the top reader.  When I was in high school I had the opportunity of doing an ROP class and getting to go back to my old elementary school to work with her again as a classroom aide.  My afternoons were so much fun. :) Working with her cemented the fact that I wanted to be a teacher when I grew up.

Hope you have a wonderful day!

Five for Friday

Posted on 07:32 by Unknown

Linking up with Doodlebugs Teaching to share 5 things from my week.  You might have seen some of these over on Instagram.  :)

This past week I realized that my vacation is about halfway over and that I had yet to even start on my to do list...  that scared me!  So I got busy...

First up I made one of my first math units to tackle - after place value and rounding comes adding & subtracting multi-digit numbers.  My intermediate kids have to go up to 4 numbers with and without regrouping, and they usually need some practice.  Insert some cute apple task cards (since we will be doing this in September).
Then I was busy with my boys in the kitchen.

Yep, yep - pancakes on a Thursday morning AND Trix Treats.  :) Yummy!

I also went shopping a bit... wanted to share what I picked up.  The online shopping bug has really kicked into high gear!

I bought the Amazon Dry Erase Deal

These babies were on sale from $21.99 to $6.99 a box!!!

I have to learn to say NO soon... of course next week or the next the sales will be in the stores and I do have to buy school supplies for these new kiddos...

I did play some games...

We both didn't realize someone had already won...
... and last I started prepping stuff for next year.  This was a biggie that I've had FOREVER (I'm exaggerating) but needed to wait for time and patience and ink to print.  I still have to laminate it, but that's another day...
